Statement of Policy & Text
Interlibrary Services (ILS) is responsible for photocopy requests of music from the Choral, Magazine, Sheet, Songbook, and Stock Music Collections.
Need for the Policy
All material indexed in the Music Collections database is non-circulating Reference. ILS will photocopy and deliver requested music titles to other libraries initiating an ILL request via standard ILL protocol.
Requirements & Guidelines
The following section explains how ILS staff can locate, request and obtain music copies.
Location of music collections in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library
- Reference unit, second floor in the Ready Reference section on the 2nd Floor, near the Adaptive Technology Center.
- Magazine Music Collection: includes bound volumes of Sing Out! (Various from v.16 to v.36) And Sheet Music Magazine (various from v.1 to v.28).
- Songs/Songbooks Collection: a continuing collection, which contains a wide variety of music with an emphasis on popular music from the 1970s on. Includes over 600 songbooks with 22,347 titles. Songbooks are shelf filed in numerical order according to the accession number printed on an orange dot on the spine of each songbook. Each song found in a songbook in the database has a corresponding number, indicating the songbook(s) in which it can be found.
- Special Collections, The California Room archives on the 5th Floor.
- Choral Music Collection: sheet music for different voice ranges. This collection contains 17,000 titles.
- Sheet Music Collection: a collection of popular songs from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s, which was donated to the library. It contains 18,000 titles.
- Stock Music Collection: another donated collection consists mostly of big band music from 1878 to 1967 with parts for different band instruments. The 6,100 titles.
ILS staff does not have access to music stored in the Special Collections archives. California Room staff will pull music from Special Collections at ILS’ request. ILS will fill out an electronic request and email it to the California Room. The request from will be loaded on the King Forms page.
The California Room staff:
- Will check the California Room email every morning.
- Will pull the sheet music from the vault and leave it at the California Room service point for the ILL staff to pickup.
The ILS staff: - Will pick up pulled music during the open hours of the California Room.
- Make necessary photocopies.
- Be made aware that some of the sheet music may be too fragile to be copied.
