The library provides instruction in university level research and information competency through
course-integrated library instruction sessions and hands-on workshops. Following Academic Senate policy, this instruction program
reaches students at three levels to teach a progression of skills: in English 1B & MUSE during the freshman year, during the Junior
Level Writing course (100W), and the graduate introduction to research methods. Additionally, Librarian Liaisons work
with their department faculty to develop specialized instruction sessions or workshops for other courses. Workshops on new
resources are also offered for teaching faculty.

The Library has designed a three-step program for the students that begin with students completing SJSU InfoPower (a tutorial
of three modules that teach the student to select, search and evaluate information). Then, in preparation for the library hands on
session, students draft a thesis statement. During the hands on session the library instructor reinforces and builds on
information learned from the InfoPower modules. The session concludes with students beginning their online research with the
assistance of the library instructor and their professor. English 1B Resources page.

MUSE (Metropolitan University Scholar's Experience) programs and activities exist to help first year students succeed at San Jose State University. The 100 special MUSE
seminar courses that will begin in Fall 2002 will each be assigned a Librarian who will work closely with the instructor and the
students offering assistance in improving research skills. Under the direction of the instructor and the librarian MUSE students
will develop information literacy competence skills that they can use across the curriculum and as tools for lifelong learning.
