Finding Articles in the Library

Searching the Library Catalog | Interpreting the Journal Record | Finding a Journal on the Shelves | If It's Not on the Shelf

Searching the Library Catalog
The Library Catalog lets you identify which journal titles are held by the SJSU Library. The Library Catalog can be searched in many ways, depending on what you're looking for.
  • Use the JOURNAL TITLE option to search for the complete journal indicated in a database citation or abstract. Note that you can only search the Library Catalog by the journal title, not the title of an individual article within that journal.

Interpreting the Journal Record
The Library Catalog includes all magazines and journals in the SJSU Library. The Library Catalog will indicate whether the SJSU Library owns a particular journal title, but does not list the titles of individual articles within that journal. The bibliographic record can help you determine whether or not you want the journal, and where the journal is located.

Finding a Journal on the Shelves
Once you find a journal title of interest in the Library Catalog, your first step is to check the LOCATION and CALL NUMBER on the journal record.
  1. Once you know the LOCATION, the CALL NUMBER gives you the exact location of the journal on the shelf. Remember that more recent issues of journals will be available behind the Periodicals Public Service Desk. Look for the CALL NUMBER in a box near the middle of the book record screen. This collection of letters and numbers is your key to finding the book, so be sure to copy down the entire call number exactly as given. For information on using call numbers to find a book on the shelf, refer to Library of Congress Call Numbers page.

  2. In general, Library Journals must be used in the Library only. Please check at the Periodicals Service Desk for exceptions to this rule.

If It's Not on the Shelves
  1. Check the sorting area on the Lower Level floor to see if the volume and issue you're looking for is still on its way back to the shelves.

  2. If you are looking for a current issue of the journal title (one within the last year), check at the Lower Level Magazines, Journals & Newspapers Room.

  3. If you cannot find the journal in the sorting area and the issue you are looking for isn't a current one, you can get help at the Lower Level Periodicals Service Desk.
