The need for quality early childhood development programs far out
strips the supply. Smart Start San José programs are located
in areas identified as in need of early childhood development programs.
All programs must meet California Health & Safety Standards
for Child Care Programs. In addition, programs must incorporate
Smart Start San José Program Quality Standards (PQS). Programs
are operated by public or private providers through early child
development centers, Head Start programs, State Preschools, private
business owners, and family child care homes.
Smart Start San José programs are located in areas:
- That currently meet or have the ability to meet local and
State zoning/permit regulations
- Where school academic performance reports indicate that children are under-performing
- Identified as in need of early care and education/child care services
- That are designated as Strong Neighborhood Initiatives (SNI) or City of San José Redevelopment areas

Cambrian

Smart Start San José in the Cambrian area, to date, consists
of one privately owned and operated business. This center is located
right off of Highway 85.

Evergreen
|

Smart Start San José in the Evergreen area, to date, consists
of one center located on the new Evergreen High School campus. It
is convenient for parents attending school and others who live and/or
work in the nearby vicinity.

Jose Downtown

San José Downtown programs are located within the
area defined from Hedding to Williams Streets (North to South) and
from Highway 87 to 24th Street (West to East). To date, downtown
has one Smart Start San José center located on the Washington
Elementary School Campus. A School Health Clinic is co-located with
the center.

Jose East

Smart Start San José East programs are located
east of First Street, either north or south of Berryessa Road. To
date, this area has the most Smart Start San José programs.
The programs are located on/near either an elementary or high school
campus.

Smart Start San José South programs are located
south of Hedding Street, either west or east of First Street. To
date, there are four Smart Start centers in this area.

Smart Start San José West programs are located
west of First Street, either north or south of Hedding Street .
To date, there is one Smart Start San José center in this
area. The site is located on the San José/Campbell border
on the Rosemary Elementary School campus.
