City of San José's Commitment to Early Care and Education
The City of San José opened the Office on Child Care in
1988 to facilitate the expansion of early childhood education in
San José, California. Since then, much has been accomplished.
The formation of an Early Care and Education Commission, the development
of a strategic work plan, the streamlining of City regulatory processes,
coordination of existing agencies and early education professionals
and providers in the county, identification of funding sources,
and the launching of an early care and education public awareness
campaign are but a few of significant achievements.

Mayor
Gonzales Takes the Initiative on Child Care
|
In 1999, Mayor Ron Gonzales
and the City Council launched a series of significant
early education
initiatives including the Smart Start San José program. In
his 2002 State of the City Address, Mayor Gonzales called for a renewed
level of commitment to meet the needs of the community's youngest
residents. "Working families of San José need our help.
Child care is too important to them and to the future of our community
not to be addressed," said the mayor. "Our goal is that
every child in San José will have access to quality and affordable
child care. Our children deserve no less."
