Mission and Vision

The City of San José has a strong history of commitment to the Early Education Initiative established by Mayor Ron Gonzales in 1999 and its Mission to increase access to quality, affordable early childhood care and education for all San Jose children and families, and Vision that all children will enter school with the foundation needed for academic and social success.

Early Care and Education Programs

To do this the Early Care and Lifelong Literacy unit of the library coordinates two programs that support high quality early childhood care and learning opportunities.
  • Smart Start San José
    Provides a variety of services for parents, families, childcare providers, early educators and the business community

  • Books For Little Hands
    Provides professional development activities, workshops and free educational materials for child care providers

Early Care and Education Commission

The City of San José's Early Care and Education Commission provides oversight of the early care and education of children ages 0-5.
