IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Many people who die never have obituaries in the newspaper.

The Mercury News is likely to have obituaries only for someone who died in the San Jose area or had close ties to it.

For other San Jose area obituary indices, please view the Obituaries web page

You usually need to find a death date because most newspapers do not have indices to help you find a person by name. Most newspapers are not indexed at all before the mid 1980s. The indexing date depends on the newspaper.

Obituaries are articles telling about a person’s life and death. Some people are mentioned in “Death Notices,” which just give the person's name, date of death and usually place of death.
