Subject Collections



  • Bukowski Collection: Approximately 60 volumes of the modern poetry of Charles Bukowski, 1920-1994. Poems are of a unique beatnik style from a most unconventional personality.


  • Edwin Markham Collection: A collection of materials on poet Edwin Markham, one of San Jose State's most distinguished graduates.


  • Fine Art Print Collection: A collection of approximately 200 original art prints acquired over the years, a significant number were added in 1967 and 1968. The collection includes works by Japanese artists from the early 20th century.


  • Flaherty Collection: Internment documents and memos used by wartime civil control administration during the time of the Japanese-American Internment, World War II.


  • Folklore Archive: Approximately 4000 pages including folk speeches, legends, proverbs, and superstitions. These folklore items were collected by Dr. Arthur Regan, from students in his English 121 course, Introduction to Folklore. Arranged by many subject categories of ethnic groups.


  • Glenn Snarr Collection: A collection of approximately 1200 volumes of modern history and literature, the majority of which are first editions.


  • Jackson Aeronautical Collection: Approximately 2,000 volumes, donated to the library in 1977 by Rodney Hoisington Jackson, 1905-1981. The collection is particularly rich in early technical books, early novels, and children's books with aeronautical themes, and accounts of World Wars I and II aerial operations. The collection was the life long interest of Mr. Jackson, whose entire career was in aviation. A 1926 Harvard graduate in history and literature, he resided with his family in the Bay Area from 1956 until his death.


  • John Byrne Collection: Approximately 800 documents, with major focus on the American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic (A.A.R.I.R.) - local, state, and national levels, and the merging of the Friends of Irish Freedom (F.O.I.F.) and the A.A.R.I.R.


  • St. David's World War I Collection: A collection of approximately 182 classic works on World War I, uniformly bound in red leather, formerly the property of Lord St. David.


  • San Jose State University Oral Histories Collection: Transcription of 30 interviews conducted with SJSU administrators and faculty recalling events and developments in the history of SJSU. Some restrictions have been imposed on their use.


  • Shephard Whitman Collection: The working library of Walt Whitman materials amassed by SJSU Professor Esther Shephard of the English Department, and donated to the library by her heirs around 1988. The collection consists of approximately 120 books, and some personal papers and publications.


  • Willard Schmidt Collection: Japanese internment papers of Willard Schmidt acquired in 1992, containing documents, photos, letters, and memos of Tule Lake Internment Camp during World War II.


  • World War Poster Collection: Several hundred original propaganda posters primarily from World War I period, with some World War II material. Approximately 1447 posters were acquired by Professor Charles Burdick.
