Purpose Statement

The San José State University Library Cultural Heritage Center is made up of three distinct but complementary collections which share a service commitment and a designated space in the new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. The collections, which support established academic programs at SJSU, include the Africana, Asian American and Chicano collections. Each of these is supported by the advice and good efforts of their respective Resource Center Advisory Committees.

Collectively the intent of the three collections is to accomplish the following:

  • To create a nurturing academic support center for their respective students.

  • To facilitate the development of information literacy abilities so that their students can become effective lifelong learners by being able to access, evaluate and effectively use all library resources.

  • To foster in students a deeper understanding and pride in their respective cultures and to grow in appreciation and understanding of other cultures.

  • To provide a point of entry for all SJSU students seeking as part of their studies or at their own initiative to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the history and culture of Africana, Asian American and Chicano communities.

  • To provide a complementary collection of comparative multicultural resources to facilitate research among and between cultures.

  • To work collaboratively with their respective communities in San José to enrich programming and fund raising opportunities.
