Reflections on WW II @ San José Libraries

Reminiscences of local WW II veterans and book club discussions formed the basis for library programs scheduled in November 2007at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and branches of the San José Public Library system. These programs complemented local public television broadcast of "The War" – a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, which provided a partial snapshot of the World War II experience through the personal accounts of a handful of men and women from four geographically distributed American towns: Waterbury, Conn.; Mobile, Ala.; Sacramento, Calif.; and the tiny farming town of Luverne, Minn. According to a joint press release issued by the Library of Congress and the Public Broadcasting Service, "the series explores the most intimate human dimensions of one of the greatest cataclysms in history." San José libraries continue to provide an opportunity for local veterans to share personal photos of WW II, both among themselves and with the community. Further your discovery of this momentous period in U.S. history by visiting the Library of Congress Veterans History Project.
