Old City Directories, property maps, and other documents often will give you the names of people who owned or lived in your old house. It is often possible to learn more about these people by checking the following sources.

  • California Room Database
This unique online source indexes more than 75,000 references to people, places, and events in San José and Santa Clara County History. It is the best place to start looking for information on people, particularly those active in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

  • Great Register of Santa Clara County
The Great Register lists all males in Santa Clara County who were registered to vote. Information includes name, age, country or state of birth, occupation, local residence, date of registration and, if not native born, place and date of naturalization. The California Room owns the Great Register for these years:
    • 1867
    • 1879
    • 1880
    • 1884
    • 1890
    • 1896

  • Santa Clara County Census Rolls
