Your Old House - Maps

Printer-FriendlyPrinter-Friendly

The California Room has many map resources for your research on the history of your house.

  • Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps
These maps show in great detail lots, houses, and businesses located in central San José. A number of older Sanborn Maps dating back to the late 19th century are available on microfilm. The appearance of your house in an old Sanborn Map can give a clue to its age, as well as its original architectural outline and the location of any outbuildings. Index to Sanborn Maps in the California Room.

  • Historical Atlas of Santa Clara County
Published in 1876 by Thompson & West, this oversized atlas will give the names of large property owners in San José and Santa Clara County. This was the first comprehensive atlas of Santa Clara County, and is especially useful in identifying landowners outside the 1876 San José city limits. The Historical Atlas is also online at:

  • City of San José Block Book
Published in 1871 by H.H. Stevenson, this resource gives dimensions and owners of blocks in San José.

  • Block Book of the City of San José
Published in 1909 and compiled by F.G. Harriman, this source gives owners, block numbers, and subdivisions.

  • Thomas Brothers' Block Book of San José
Published in the mid 1920s, this multivolume set gives dimensions and owners for all property lots in San José.

  • San José Property Maps
This series of maps dates back to the late 1930s. It is similar to the Thomas Brothers' Block Book in giving dimensions and owners for all property lots in San José.

  • Wall Maps
These large roll-up maps give the names of major property owners. They are most useful for tracing property ownership in areas outside the San José City limits. The California Room owns these maps:
    • San José and vicinity, 1892
    • Santa Clara County, 1902
    • San José and vicinity, 1914
    • Santa Clara County, 1914
    • San José and vicinity, 1924

  • Street Maps
The California Room Map File has a large collection of old street maps for San José and Santa Clara County. While these maps do not show structures or land owners, they can help locate streets whose names have changed or streets which no longer exist. Please browse our Map Subject Index.
