The California Room provides many resources to start your research on the history of your house:

San José City Directories, 1870-1979

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps

Historic Preservation, City of San José (external website)
Includes links to San Jose Historic Resources Inventory, maps of historic districts and lists of historic landmarks.

Santa Clara County Heritage Resource Inventory
Inventories were published by the Santa Clara County Historical Commission in 1975,1979 and 1999. These inventories list historic landmarks and buildings by community with brief descriptions and black and white photographs. The 1975 edition includes archeological sites and maps. The 1979 edition lists historic register designations and has an index of architects/builders/designers. The 1999 edition describes historic landmark categories and includes a listing of historic trees.

Visual Inventory of Historic & Archeological Sites in San José
Compiled in the early 1970s by a group of local historians and architects who walked the older neighborhoods of San José looking for noteworthy structures. Each structure chosen was given an architectural and historical evaluation. Brief notes were taken and the owner/tenant was interviewed if possible. A photograph was also taken. The California Room has a copy of this 5 volume survey. The original is in the San José Historical Museum Archives.

City of San José Building Permits
This is a microfilmed set of building permits issued by the City of San José from 1940 through 1986. Permits are listed by street name and number. This is a good source of information if your house was built in the city limits during this time period. It will list the date the permit was issued, and the name of the owner/developer. It will also reveal if any remodeling was done during this time period.

More recent information is at San José Permits Online (external website)

Haines Criss-Cross Directories and Pacific Bell Reverse Directories
These directories date from mid 1960s. They allow the names of residents to be looked up by street address. They are useful for finding who lived in your house after 1979 when the San José City Directories ceased publication. They can also be used for cities and unincorporated areas outside San José.

Santa Clara County Tax Assessor Rolls
The California room has these tax rolls on microfilm beginning with 1979. They allow you to determine the owner of a specific piece of property in Santa Clara County.
NOTE: Limited property information is available through the Santa Clara County Office of the Assessor (external website).

Arts and Crafts Movement: Craftsman Style Bungalows (external website)
This external website presents an overview of the Arts and Crafts Movement and information about how to identify a Craftsman home and architects who developed this style.
