Census Rolls in the California Room

The California Room has copies of the detailed census rolls for Santa Clara County for 1860-1880 and for 1900-1930. The 1890 census rolls for the entire county were destroyed by a fire.

Census rolls give the names and ages of spouses and children, as well as the occupations of adults.

The census rolls are organized in a fashion which makes it nearly impossible to locate individuals without first using an index. The California Room has an index to the 1860 and the 1870 censuses. The California Room does not have any Soundex indexes.
