Auction house

Enter the name of the auction house (e.g. Sotheby's, Stargardt, or Christie's). Many of the smaller auction houses are also represented.

Catalog concordance

Most Beethoven letters have been published in the following collections. To retrieve information on specific letters, enter the corresponding letter number from either of these collections, as shown:

The Letters of Beethoven, compiled and translated by Emily Anderson (London: Macmillan, 1961).
    Enter as Anderson L[no.] (e.g. Anderson L1497)
Ludwig van Beethoven, Briefwechsel Gesamtausgabe, edited by Sieghard Brandenburg (Munich: G. Henle, 1996-1998).
    Enter as BG [no.] (e.g. BG 244)

Some of Beethoven's individual sketch pages and sketch books are cataloging in the "Verzeichnis der Skizzen Beethovens" compiled by Hans Schmidt (Beethoven-Jahrbuch v. 6 (1969), p. 7-128). To search under these catalog numbers, use the abbreviation SV [no.] (e.g. SV 337).

Date of sale

To retrieve a list of items sold on a particular date or within a range of dates, enter the dates using one of the following formats:

Exact date: mm/dd/yy (e.g. 05/14/96)
Specific month: mm/yy (e.g. 05/00 for May 2000)
Range of dates: mm/dd/yy-mm/dd/yy (e.g. 07/01/05-12/31/05 for July-December 2005)

Title keyword

Enter names, dates, and other keywords. Titles are entered from the information given in the auction catalogs and are not always consistent.

Treasure tracking

The purpose of this index is to keep track of manuscripts and other unique materials sold at recent auctions whose current location is unknown. Search options include: Manuscript; Object; Other.

Sale amount

Enter an exact amount or range. For example, a search on "2000-10000" will retrieve records for items sold for between $2,000-10,000 in U.S. currency.

Work

Beethoven's works are indexed by the Opus or WoO (Work without opus) numbers as listed in the standard thematic catalog, Das Werk Beethovens, compiled by George Kinsky and Hans Halm, and many other reference sources. For example, to find materials related to the Eroica Symphony, enter "Opus 55."

Please note that lists will displayed in reverse chronological order by date of sale. Sorting of records by other criteria is not possible.
