The first detailed atlas of Santa Clara County. Very helpful for tracing early land ownership as it gives the owners of medium and large parcels throughout the county. It also includes prints of many local homes, businesses and public institutions. The Historical Atlas is also online at:

  Descriptive look at late 19th century San José and Santa Clara County. Some historical narrative and statistics, but most valuable for its many photographs.

  General history of Santa Clara County. Also histories of individual towns and some businesses as well. One third of the book consists of biographical sketches of prominent settlers and leading men.

  Earliest written history of San José. Author was a Spanish speaking lawyer who specialized in land law. Hall is a very good source on the pueblo days of San José, the transition from Mexican to American rule, the impact of the gold rush on San José, and the legal battles over Spanish/Mexican land grants.

  Reprints a series of articles that ran in the San José Mercury. Useful for those needing a brief historical survey of San José up to the early 1930s.

  Published to commemorate the visit of President McKinley to Santa Clara County in May 1901. Extols in florid prose the delights of Santa Clara County. Valuable more for its many photographs and portraits rather for its historical accuracy.

  Three hundred pages of local history followed by 1350 pages of biographical entries. An extremely valuable resource.

The California Room contains:

Old copies of the San José Mercury News on microfilm are not kept in the California Room. They are housed in the Periodicals Department in the King Library's Lower Level and may be accessed whenever the King Library is open.
