SJ Mercury Souvenir Book, 1895

Browse selected photos from the book, "Sunshine, Fruit and Flowers: Santa Clara County, California - San Jose Mercury Souvenir." This "souvenir" book of Santa Clara County was published by the San Jose Mercury in 1895. The object was to promote Santa Clara County as a great place to live and work, a place of "sunshine, fruit, and flowers." The text contains many facts, figures, and glowing descriptions of Santa Clara County. But its greatest strength are the many pictures and illustrations showing structures, farms, people and places throughout the county. It is the best source for showing what San José and Santa Clara County looked like in the late 19th century.
