FINES AND LOST MATERIALS PAYMENT POLICY

print thisPrint This

Statement of Policy & Text

Due dates for library materials are indicated on the receipt given to customers when the items are checked out. If items are kept beyond the due date, fines are charged. Fines accrue daily for items not returned on time. Fines accrue hourly for Course Reserves items not returned on time.

Borrowers are responsible for returning materials on time, or for payment of fines if materials are kept past the due date. Borrowers are responsible for all materials checked out on their card. The library reserves the right to limit or deny checkout to borrowers with excessive delinquencies.

Need for the Policy
To detail the policy for dealing with fines owed to the library by customers for items that are lost or returned after the due date.

Requirements & Guidelines

If a borrower fails to return materials, even if due to loss or theft, they will be billed 28 days after the due date and charged the full price of the item. A handling charge will be added to Public Library items. University items have a set replacement cost, in addition to a handling charge and applicable fines.

Payment for lost material and handling fee is not refundable if item is subsequently returned. See: Lost and Paid Refund Policy for more information.

Full payment for fines is always encouraged. It is best to resolve borrower records at the time of return, or as soon as possible thereafter. However, extenuating circumstances may occur, and borrowers may wish to make payments in increments. If a customer returns an item that was checked out to another borrower, or if they can identify the account and the item that was checked out to another borrower, they will be allowed to pay the associated fine even though they do not have the associated library card in their possession. They will not be given any further information about the library account, and will only be given the cash register receipt when the payment is made.

Borrowers with fines or overdues above a certain threshold may be denied checkout.
