REFERENCE MAP COLLECTION POLICY

print thisPrint This

Statement of Policy & Text
The map reference collection of the King Library, the collection is operated jointly by SJSU Library staff and SJPL staff. Responsibility for collecting, developing, and maintaining the map collection is divided between these two staffs, based on their existing collection strengths.

(Areas of responsibility for each staff are given in the Requirements and Guidelines section below.)

Need for the Policy
The reference map collection represents the collection development philosophies of each institution, which differ based on the needs of the University community vs. those of the civic community at large. Consolidation of the map collection in the King Library should logically focus on the strengths of both organizations and their collections.

Coordination of the reference map collection between these two staffs is necessary to ensure the timely acquisition of needed map materials and eliminate duplication of effort.

Requirements & Guidelines
University and public librarians shall be responsible for the following map formats, not including media disk or electronically stored formats, unless so instructed by administrative decision:

SJSU
  1. Classroom hanging maps
  2. Relief / raised maps
  3. Flat maps, like the USGS topographical sheets
  4. Nautical and astronomical charts.
SJPL
