Free do-it-yourself options for California and out-of-state residents:
- San José residents and others nearby can conduct their own newspaper searches at the King Library. The Library provides an online guide: How To Research San José Area Obituaries.
- Residents of other California cities should contact their local public library for help in obtaining free obituary searches from California State "Second-Level Reference" networks.
- Out-of-area residents can contact their closest public library with microfilm reading equipment and request the Interlibrary Loan of newspaper microfilm from the California State Library.
Fee-based option:
The Silicon Valley Library System Reference Center (SRC) provides fee-based obituary search and delivery services to out-of-state residents and to California residents who prefer the convenience of online ordering. SRC will search the San Jose Mercury News and the San Francisco Chronicle and deliver scanned copies of obituaries via email, fax or U.S. mail.
- Consult SRC’s Obituaries & Death Notices page for fees and ordering info and its Obituary Order Form page to order the obituary, or call SRC at 650-356-2126 or 650-349-5538 x3047
