Summer Reading Celebration 2008

How to Participate | Summer Reading Events

Summer Reading Celebration is an eight-week-long program that encourages recreational reading as a family activity, offering fun prizes as rewards for reaching each reading milestone.

Starting June 14th, pick up your Reading Log at the Summer Reading Celebration desk in your neighborhood library!

This program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, Round Table Pizza, and the San Jose Mercury News, with additional support from Bay Area Parent™ and other community organizations, including branch library Friends groups.

How to Participate

  1. Sign up at the Summer Reading Celebration desk and receive a program Reading Log. Track your progress in your Reading Log. Participate as an individual or as a family/group, using one log.

  2. Participants may earn credits by reading their own books or by reading aloud to children of any age, who also earn credit.

  3. Teen "Metamorphosis @ your Library" participants: Check a box for every 10 minutes of reading.

  4. Receive a fun prize for each 6 hours read, up to a total of 5 prizes for 30 hours of reading.

  5. Only those items read between Saturday, June 14 and Saturday, August 9 will be eligible to earn credits.

  6. Fill out a Reading Log as often as you like, but only once for prizes.

  7. If a Reading Log is lost, the participant must start over.

  8. Claim earned prizes at the Summer Reading Celebration desk between June 21 and August 9.

Featured Programs -

Insect Discovery Lab
Get acquainted with some of the critters that are native to tropical rain forests. Giant millipedes, hissing cockroaches and walking sticks are a few of the insects that you might see and pet as you learn about the important roles these fascinating creatures play. Understand why arthropods – insects, spiders, millipedes, and the like – are every bit as deserving of our protection as are larger animals like snow leopards and spotted owls.

Insect Songs with Sandi & Stevie
March in time with the Marching Ants, hop! hop! hop! with the Green Grasshopper, learn the infamous Itchy Itchy Dance with the Itchy Flea and buzz, fly & zoom around with the insects as Sandi & Stevie sing and perform The Greedy Wasp, Zzzooming Everywhere and Beautiful Butterfly. Using a combination of humor, fantasy and reality, Sandi & Stevie help teach kids about the habits of our insect friends and encourage us to live in harmony with them.

These and many other Summer Reading Events are offered at our libraries! - See schedule
