Prince
Across The Water
by Jane Yolen and Robert J. Harris
In 1746, a bitter war is raging in the rugged Scottish highlands.
The beleaguered Scottish clans have rallied to the call of their
exiled prince, Charles Stuart. Prince Charles extols his loyal
followers to take up arms against the absolute tyranny and domination
of England.
On the verge of becoming a man, Duncan MacDonald, a fourteen-year-old
epileptic, leaps at the chance to join his father and the MacDonald
clan in a war to restore Prince Charlie to the Scottish throne.
But he is allowed only to follow his father and grandfather to
meet the prince. After listening to Granda’s stories of
war heroics and bravery, Duncan envisions a noble cause, honorable
battles, and exciting adventures. He and his cousin Ewan decide
to run away to join their Scottish brethren in the battle at Culloden.
But when they arrive at the camp, they find horror, death, and
great dismay among the men. Instead of feeling noble, Duncan begins
to question the purpose of this war, and whether he can find the
courage to continue fighting for the cause.
