Son
of the Mob
by Gordon Korman
“Alex --” I open the suitcase for him.
He goggles. “Jeez, Vince. I know L.A. is expensive, but
how much money do you need?”
“It’s Mob money!” I rasp. “I must have
taken the wrong suitcase!’
Alex whistles. “How much do you think there is?”
We do a little wiseguy accounting. Hundred-dollar bills, four
packets across by seven deep, stacked at least a dozen high. Three
million. Maybe four.
I point to the bathroom door. “Not a word to Kendra, you
hear me? For all we know, her old man’s looking for this
money.”
That’s the big kicker about Kendra: her dad is an FBI agent.
Not just any FBI agent, but Agent Bite-Me, head of the Luca investigation.
Of all the girls in the tristate area, I had to fall for the daughter
of the guy whose job it is to send my father to prison.
Seventeen-year-old, Vince Luca’s life is constantly complicated
by the fact that his dad is a notorious Mafia boss. He hates the
life of crime, cover-up and deception and wants no part of it.
As a cover, his wealthy family runs the “vending machine
business” in New York, and Vince is increasingly determined
to extricate himself from the tentacles of the family business.
Especially after he finds that his older brother Tommy has been
doing some business with the slime-bucket, Jimmy the Rat, and
as a result an unconscious and bloody body is discovered Vince’s
car trunk.
Vince’s dad, the King of the Mob, is on the surface a seemingly
reasonable and sensible man. He is a person who can be lots of
fun when he is in the right mood and a guy who can give jaw-dropping
presents to his kids, like a new Porsche. But under his smooth
veneer, Vince’s dad is a thoroughly ruthless and vicious
enforcer of Mob justice. The very mention of his name can turn
the hearts of other Mobsters into cold stones. Things get really
complicated when Vince falls in love with Kendra, the beautiful
daughter of the FBI agent assigned to bring down the Mob (especially
Vince’s dad). This means, of course, there’s potential
trouble waiting at every turn for Vince’s family and his
relationship with Kendra. On the other hand, it might bring some
good things … like getting out from under the thumb of the
Mob.
