So
Hard To Say
by Alex Sanchez
I'd never held a girl's hand before – except
during field trips when I was little. Never in a romantic way.
Sweat began beading on my forehead. On-screen, the
hero's best friend was found covered in blood, slashed to
death.
As if that wasn't enough, Xio's thumb
began rubbing back and forth across mine. What did that mean? Was
it a cue for something? What was I supposed to do?
Victor would know!
I glanced toward him, hoping he might turn from the
movie and somehow signal me advice. But he wasn't exactly watching
the movie. In the soft glow of the screen light, he leaned across
Carmen – his head bobbing and swaying – as they made
out.
Frederick is an eighth-grader who has recently transferred
from Wisconsin to Southern California. He becomes friends with a
pretty Latina girl named Xio. She is thirteen-years-old and a notorious
chatterbox. Xio and her fabulous girl friends have dubbed themselves
as the "Sexies." With his blond-hair and steel blue
eyes, Frederick is good-looking but he is painfully shy and reserved.
When Xio develops a major crush on him, their relationship takes
an awkward turn. You see, Frederick is finding it hard to reciprocate
Xio's amorous feelings. In the pit of his stomach he has the feeling
that he may be attracted to a boy. What can he do to sort out his
confused and mixed-up feelings? Can a boy and a girl "just"
be friends? Does his feeling for his friend, Victor, make him gay?
Frederick's sexual confusion escalates, as do his dodging techniques
when it comes to Xio's persistent advances.
