Tips on Reading Aloud to Young Children
- Make
sharing books, songs, and rhymes a regular part of your days.
- Let your child share in the reading process by helping you
choose books, turning pages for you as you read, and talking
about his or her reactions.
- Seek out new favorite books, but don't forget to revisit your
child's old favorite books from time to time.
- If your child is often restless, try to minimize distractions
such as outside noise during your reading times.
- Experiment to find books with the amount of text per page
that fits your child's current attention span.
- Interact with your child while you read. Encourage your child
to join you as you point at and name items in the pictures,
make animal noises, sing, laugh, and have fun.
- Pick books that both of you enjoy.
- Try a variety of materials and a variety of styles of sharing
them: quiet, dramatic, soothing, silly, etc.
