Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bust

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. BustThe King Library is the new home to a bronze bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by renowned artist Sascha Schnittmann.  At a dedication ceremony on Wednesday, February 6,2013 in the library lobby, SJSU President Dr. Mohammad Qayoumi accepted the stunning work, a donation from KQED to the university from Becca Reed, Executive Director of KQED Silicon Valley, who shared that Schnittmann began working on the piece in 1968 as an “effort of respect.” Originally unveiled in 1972 in San Francisco's Grace Cathedral by Coretta Scott King, the piece is  three times life size and weighs 100 pounds. Reverend Jeff Smith, President of the San Jose chapter of the NAACP, also attended the event and spoke to the far-reaching influence of Dr. King.  Thousands of library visitors can now enjoy the sculpture and be reminded of the legacy of the library’s namesake.
