Being a Librarian at San José State University

"A library like no other for a community like no other." That was the original vision-now realized-for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. Our unique "marriage" of large university library (serving 30,000 students plus faculty and staff) and a major urban library system (serving the 10th-largest city in the country) began in August 2003. In the next few years, the university side if the King Library anticipates a significant number of retirements. If you are interested in beginning a career as an academic librarian, or making a change in an established career, we invite you to consider a position at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library of San José State University.

If any or all of the following appeal to you, the King Library is the place for you:
  • Opportunity: With many of our senior library faculty retiring soon, you can have an unusually significant impact quickly. Help us reinvent and refine our services to keep ahead of our creative students and faculty. As a faculty member, you also have many opportunities to participate in university governance through projects, committees, and serving on the Academic Senate.

  • Diversity: No matter how you define diversity-culture, race, age, sexual orientation, economic background, language-we have it. Both the University and City have collections and programs exceptional in cultural richness and variety. See our Multicultural Gateway for a mere taste.

  • Research: Librarians at San José State University have full faculty status, and as such are eligible for a variety of small grants and other incentives that support research leading to publication and presentation. Our unique situation provides a veritable laboratory for conducting the kind of research that makes significant contributions to the profession.

  • Collaboration: With a university library, public library, and School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) in the same place, opportunities for collaboration in research or other projects are limited only by your imagination. (Our SLIS is the largest accredited library and information science program in the world, and a leader in online/distance education).

  • Learning: Our extensive and long-established Information Literacy program includes everything from classroom instruction to interactive online tutorials. Our new campus Academic Success Center includes a library presence and offers opportunities to experiment with new technologies in teaching. The Center for Faculty Development offers many opportunities both for learning to be a better teacher and for bringing your information literacy expertise to your faculty colleagues.

  • Impact: At San José State University you will be helping to prepare future leaders of Silicon Valley. You will be one of the people making the American Dream accessible to students who are often the first in their family to go to college. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library was deliberately designed to serve as both a literal and figurative gateway to lifelong learning for all.
And did we mention we have an average of over 300 days of sunshine per year?
