Librarians for Tomorrow:
Preparing a New Generation of Librarians to Serve our Communities
(Funded by Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program, Institute of Museum and Library Services)

About Our Program: Bringing Diversity to Libraries

  • The Librarians for Tomorrow program seeks to address the needs of our diverse communities by recruiting and supporting individuals from minority communities to pursue their Master in Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree, providing them with multiple opportunities to learn how librarians can effectively meet the needs of diverse populations.

  • To gain these proficiencies, students funded by our program will complete MLIS coursework, attend seminars and conferences presented by library leaders, receive coaching by mentors who understand these issues, and gain hands-on experience in libraries that serve our richly diverse community.

  • Our focus will also be on cultivating the leadership skills of this next generation of librarians, who will bring their diversity of backgrounds to the library profession and create richer programs for all library users.

The Librarians for Tomorrow program will increase the number of librarians of color and individuals from other underserved groups who hold an MLIS degree by enrolling 13 individuals from these communities into the university's MLIS program and providing them with a wide range of support to complete their graduate degrees within two years.
