Volunteer Opportunities at the San José Public Library

Volunteers needed for upcoming library branch openings!
We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic volunteers to assist with several upcoming library branch openings, as follows:
- June 28 - Joyce Ellington Branch
- August 9 - Pearl Avenue Branch
- August 23 - Willow Glen Branch
The times for these events will be approximately 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Volunteers would work a portion of this time period.
Library openings are fun and entertaining events for the public. Volunteer opportunities for this special event include assisting with activities as well as event set up. An application can be found here. In order to confirm your participation and volunteer schedule we will need to receive your volunteer application(s) at least one month before the event(s) you’d like to volunteer for. Please specify on the “Project” line near the top, which opening(s) you are interested in helping with.
We do encourage you to sign up early as there are limited shifts and opportunities available for these events. Please note that all volunteers must be 15 or older. |

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available at library
locations across the city. Volunteering at the library is
a terrific way to use your talents, provide valuable service to
the community, learn new skills and meet great people! Some of
the current opportunities include helping adults learn to read,
giving tours of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, reading
to children, and providing general assistance at the library.
Below is an overview of current volunteer opportunities. For
the complete job description of each opportunity click on the
name of the volunteer opportunity. To apply for a volunteer position,
print out the application
and return it to Volunteer Services, the address is on the application.

- Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Library Docents lead public tours of the King Library
that showcase the library’s design, collections, and art.
Volunteers must be willing to commit to 6-8 hours a month for
a minimum of one year.
- Families for Literacy volunteers
assist at monthly family literacy events by helping children
under age five with arts and crafts activities, and setting-up
and cleaning-up the events.
- Friends of the Library
Volunteers Friends of
the San José Public Library advocate the importance of
library services in communities throughout San José by
fund raising and outreach. Contact your local
branch library for further information on its Friends
Group.
- Friends of the Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Library - Board Member helps lead
an organization that raises funds to support the San Jose Public
Library through its bookstore and used-book sales.
- Friends of the
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library - Book Sale Volunteers
assist with monthly book sales.
- Friends of the
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library - Book Sorter Volunteers
sort books in the Friends bookstore.
- Friends of the
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library - Bookstore Volunteers
assist with bookstore operations including book sales, record
keeping, and assuring that the shelves are neat and stocked
for bookstore customers. There are also opportunities to sort
incoming materials before they are placed in the store.
- Homework Center volunteers
work with library staff and homework tutors to assist students
in grades 1-12 with homework assignments in a variety of subjects.
This position requires fingerprinting.
- Library Services volunteers
help your local branch library with a variety of services including
processing and displaying materials, assisting with programs
and special projects, and completing various clerical assignments.
- Partners in Reading volunteers
help an adult improve their basic reading and writing skills
by providing one-on-one
tutoring. Tutoring takes place in branches of the San José
Public Library and at other public sites in San José.
Significant training and support is given to volunteer tutors.
- Reading to Children volunteers
give children the joy of reading by reading aloud to either
small groups or individual youngsters at a branch library. Reading
occurs in the library’s children’s area at designated
times throughout the day. Specialized training is provided to
all incoming volunteers. This position requires fingerprinting. Position Description in Vietnamese.
- Summer Reading Celebration
volunteers register participants
for the annual Summer
Reading Celebration, that promotes recreational reading
for the entire family. You’ll explain the program, award
points for minutes of reading, and distribute prizes.
- Technology Aide volunteers
monitor public use of library computers and provide one-on-one-assistance
to customers on basic computer and Internet use, and word processing.
- teensReach is the
youth advisory council of the San José Public Library.
If you are a teen ages 13 to 18, sign-up and participate in
library activities, become a library advisor and advocate, and
acquire important leadership skills.
