Get Involved with the San José Public Library

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available at library locations across the city. Volunteering at the library is a terrific way to use your talents, provide valuable service to the community, learn new skills and meet great people!

Below is an overview of current volunteer opportunities. To express your interest in a volunteer position, please complete our interest form. To be an adult literacy tutor or teensReach member, please apply through the link included with the description below.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Adult Literacy Tutor
Teach an adult to improve their basic reading and writing skills by providing one-on-one tutoring. Tutoring takes place in branches of the San José Public Library and at other public sites in San José. Significant training and support is given to volunteer tutors. For more information or to apply, visit Partners in Reading. Minimum age: 18 years.

Friends of the Library
Friends of the San José Public Library advocate the importance of library services in communities throughout San José by fundraising and outreach. Contact your local branch library for further information on its Friends Group.

Homework Center Aide
Work with library staff and homework tutors to assist students in grades 1-8 with homework assignments in a variety of subjects. This position requires fingerprinting.

Library Services
Help your local branch library with a variety of services including processing and displaying materials, assisting with programs and special projects, and completing various clerical assignments.

Reading to Children
Give children the joy of reading by reading aloud to either a small groups or individual youngsters at a branch library. Reading occurs in the library’s children’s area at designated times throughout the day. Specialized training is provided to all incoming volunteers. The next training is scheduled for Saturday, March 6 and 13, 2010 from 10:15 – 12:15 at the King Library. Attendance at both sessions is required to participate as a volunteer. This position requires fingerprinting.

Technology Mentor
Provide one-on-one assistance to customers on basic computer and Internet use, and word processing. Monitor public use of library computers.

teensReach (ages 13-18)
teens Reach is the youth advisory council of the San José Public Library. If you are a teen ages 13 to 18, sign-up and participate in library activities, become a library advisor and advocate, and acquire important leadership skills. For more information or to apply, visit our teensReach page.
