San José Libraries Automated Systems Offline
As Staff Work to Restore Power to the Library Network
Libraries Remain Open Providing Basic Services
October 2, 2007 -
A network power failure at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library has temporarily interrupted access to the San José library system website (SJLibrary.org) and related online services made available through the King Library and all branches of the San José Public Library system. This means that customers, both public and campus users, are unable to access the library website – either on-site or remotely – to search the catalog, databases or other online resources. They are also unable to log on to their personal accounts to check for due dates, renew items or otherwise manage their accounts until the power problem is resolved. Public access to the Internet is also unavailable. Library staff is coordinating with San José State University Facilities, Development and Operations to resolve the problem as quickly as possible, without taking undue risks that could result in permanent damage to the network.
At this point, downtime is expected to last another 24 hours.
While lights and phones remain unaffected, the King Library and branch libraries will remain open during regularly scheduled hours of operation, providing basic phone and reference service using on-site materials. Library customers will still be able to check out materials using a staff-assisted manual process. Branches that offer free wi-fi will still be able to provide public Internet access to sites other than the library’s website for customers who have wireless laptops or handheld devices.
