Hispanic Heritage Month at San José Public Library
September
4, 2007 -
San José Public Library invites the community to get acquainted with available programs and services for and about Hispanic Heritage at any one of our 17 branches or the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. The library offers a large collection of Spanish and bilingual borrowing materials including books (in print and recorded), videos (VHS and DVD), music CDs, popular magazines and more. All collections may be searched from any computer with Internet access using the online catalog.
The Biblioteca Latinoamericana Branch serves as a resource center for Latin American culture and history for the entire Bay Area. Additional resources are available through San José State University Library's Cultural Heritage Center, located at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.
Many programs are offered bilingually or in Spanish on an ongoing basis, including storytimes, Spanish book club, basic Internet classes, citizenship Q&A and ESL conversation clubs. Select locations are offering additional special programs in honor of the Hispanic Heritage Month observance.
Hispanic Heritage Month officially begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries - Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.
Based on Census 2000 figures, an estimated 270,000 Hispanic residents (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, Spanish-speaking people of any race) live in San José. For more information on observances visit the Hispanic Heritage Month page at www.factmonster.com.
