Rare Gathering of Local Artists in Library Art
Exhibit
Exhibit Showcases the Diversity
of Vietnamese-American Cultural Expression
November 11, 2006 -
NINE, an exhibition showcasing the talents of nine local
Vietnamese-American artists, opened today at the Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San José and will
run through December 19. A special
reception for the artists will be held Sunday, November 19,
from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Rooms 255/257.
The artists represented in this exhibit are Truong Thi Thinh,
Ha Cam Tam, Dao Hai Trieu, Le Que Huong, Lam Quang Kim Phuong,
Nguyen Thi Thanh Tri, Henry Trinh Nghiep, Trinh Mai, and Jenny
Do. Their styles, as diverse as their backgrounds, represent three
generations. Their works range from classic representational paintings
to modern abstract works. Their collaboration in this unique exhibit
is fueled by a common desire to build on the momentum of a nascent
movement among artistic circles within the Vietnamese-American
community in the Bay Area, thereby tending the fire of the Vietnamese
artistic soul.
NINE is one component of an alliance forged between
San José Public Library and the Viet-American Cultural
Foundation through the California Cultural Crossroads Grant. The
purpose is threefold:
- To provide the community at large with an opportunity to grow
in understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural traditions
of the Vietnamese-American community
- To extend a hand of welcome to the Vietnamese-American community
- To encourage broader use of the library as a community resource,
thereby supporting the cultural and lifelong learning goals of
the Vietnamese community
This exhibit is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and
Library Services under the provision of the Library Services and
Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
The exhibit is located in the Exhibit Area on the library’s
second floor and is accessible during all library open hours.
