Learn a Language Without Leaving Home
San José Public Library Introduces Language Series
eAudio Books
June 1, 2006 -
Traveling abroad this summer? Need to brush up on your language
skills? Or perhaps you have newly arrived in the United States
and want to learn English. Either way, learning a language just
got a whole lot easier.
San José Public Library announces the addition of the
Pimsleur Language Series to its growing collection of downloadable
audio books. Users can choose among 150+ titles; from Albanian
to Vietnamese. All are available at the Beginning level; many
are available at the Intermediate and High Intermediate level.
In addition, English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) titles are available
for those whose first language is Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese,
Cantonese, French, German, Haitian, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean,
Mandarin, Russian, Spanish or Vietnamese.
ESL titles are expected to be among the most popular. “ESL
materials in traditional formats are among the most highly circulated,”
says King Library General Collections Manager Rita Torres. “There
is such a high demand in this area, that we can’t put them
out fast enough.” The Pimsleur Language Series eAudio books
should go a long way towards satisfying that demand. With unlimited
concurrent checkouts and and unlimited renewals, a title is guaranteed
to be available when you want it.
To check out the Pimsleur Language Series, all you need is an
Internet connection and either a computer, laptop or portable
listening device plus a current San José Library Card.
There are no hefty manuals to fumble with because Pimsleur Language
Series relies entirely on the audio approach to learning a language.
Just don your headphones and get started. As with most other eBooks,
titles in the Pimsleur Language Series will automatically “return”
themselves after three weeks. Not finished? No problem. Just login
- renewal takes only seconds!
Downloadable eBooks have been very popular since their introduction
in 2004. Currently over 8,000 San José library card holders
have taken advantage of the new format with, on average, 10 new
users signing up each day.
"You just can’t beat them for convenience,”
says San José Public Library Director Jane Light, “and
that’s what our users tell us they want. Plus eBooks are
ready to go the day we get them; no lag time for processing and
no waiting in line to check out."
To access the Pimsleur Language series, select “Pimsleur
Language Program” from our Articles
& Databases list. Enter your name, library card number
and PIN to login from outside the library. Type the desired language
in the field “Search for Audiobooks” and click on
“Search.” Locate the desired title and click on “Download
this Audiobook.” Within minutes, your eAudio book is ready
to take with you anywhere.
