Community Invited to Inscribe Their Thoughts in a Book of Condolences

Coretta Scott KingFebruary 1, 2006 -

Beginning on Thursday, a book of condolences will be available at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library for those wishing to express their thoughts and feelings on the death of Coretta Scott King, wife of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A tireless worker for social justice in her own right, Coretta Scott King died earlier this week at the age of 78.

The book of condolences will be located, throughout the month of February, in the Brandenburg Area on the first floor of the library.

"I can't think of a more appropriate way to honor Mrs. King," said San Jose Public Library Director Jane Light. "Her life is a model for courage and perseverance, and she leaves behind a legacy that is as memorable and inspiring as that of her late husband."

#8220;Coretta Scott King is an icon in the American civil rights movement," added San Jose State University Library Dean Ruth Kifer. "She and her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., have been key public figures during my formative and adult years," she continued. "Mrs. King's death marks the passing of an era in our history and it is fitting that we record our condolences.”

The book of condolences will be available for signing during library hours.
