Sunday
Hours Soon to be Available at 4 San José Branch Libraries
Pilot Program Will Measure Usage
Through June 2004
December 4, 2003 -
San José residents will soon have four additional options
for Sunday walk-in library service in addition to the downtown
King Library. Responding to a request from the San José
City Council to pilot a program of Sunday hours at neighborhood
branches, San José Public Library will open four geographically
dispersed branches - Berryessa, Evergreen, Vineland (opening in
January 2004) and West Valley - from 1 to 5 p.m. The pilot hours
take effect January 4, 2004 and continue through the end of June,
2004.
Funding this initiative requires an adjustment of hours during
the remainder of the week at all branch locations. For the duration
of the pilot, standardized hours shared by all branches will be
as follows:
- Monday - Wednesday: 11AM - 8PM
- Thursday - Saturday: 10AM - 6PM
The adjusted hours give working families increased opportunities
to use library services at locations near home. Sunday visitors
will enjoy most of the services that are available any other day
of the week.
“Sunday service at our libraries will help more of our
residents and families take advantage of our community’s
excellent resources for learning and recreation,” said San
José Mayor Ron Gonzales. “Libraries are essential
to the quality of life in our neighborhoods, and I’m pleased
we have found a creative solution to make them more accessible
to more people."
"We think of our libraries as the community’s living
room,” adds Library Director Jane Light. “Sunday has
traditionally been the one day of the week that families could
spend together if they chose. We hope that many families who have
otherwise found it difficult to get to the library will take advantage
of this opportunity to find out what we have to offer."
