About Calabazas Branch Library

Self-check machines at CalabazasThe Calabazas Branch is a small community library situated in a beautiful neighborhood across the street from Calabazas Park. The library first opened in 1966 and remains a highly valued institution, serving a population that is culturally diverse and family oriented. Regular library use by families in the area is reflected in the high circulation numbers and the well-attended children’s programs, including the annual Summer Reading Celebration, age-appropriate storytimes and the afterschool Homework Center.

To address the multi-cultural nature of the community, about twenty percent of the shelf space at Calabazas Branch is dedicated to multi-media materials in non-English languages. These materials, for both adults and children, are primarily in Chinese, but include Russian, Japanese, Korean and Hindi languages. Bilingual staff are available to assist customers with either reference or account questions and to provide weekly bilingual storytimes.

San José Public Libraries are continually evolving to keep pace with the interests and needs of residents. With food and drink available in the library and soft music playing, Calabazas Branch is a favorite gathering place. When the new Calabazas Branch opens in the same location by 2011, there will be space for a Group Study room, a Teen Center, a Tech Center, and a Community Room.

Materials checked out from any San José Public Library branch can be returned at Calabazas. For your convenience, we have an after-hours book drop to the left of the front door as well as a 24-hour drive-up book drop in the parking lot.
