ESL English Classes
Looking to improve your English? Free beginning level ESL classes are held at Alum Rock Library and are provided by the East Side Adult Education Program. For more information, please call the Overfelt Adult Center at (408) 254-8100. Everyone is welcome.

Citizenship Classes
Do you have questions about applying for U.S. Citizenship? Do you need help preparing for your Citizenship Interview? Would like to learn more about U.S. History, Government and Civics? Join us every Saturday for a weekly Citizenship class provided by the East Side Adult Education Program. For more information please call (408) 254-8101.

'Picturing America' Photo Contest
Take a photo with your digital camera or phone, related to the theme of "Picturing America." Photos may be color or black and white. For inspiration you may want to look at the photos of famous American photographers such as Ansel Adams, and Dorothea Lang.

All contestants should:

  • Be age 12 to 18
  • Submit photo via e-mail as an attachment sent to picturing.america@yahoo.com. The e-mail message should include your first and last name, and age.
  • Complete entry form (available at the library) and have it signed by a parent or legal guardian.
  • Submit photo via e-mail, and form in person to the Dr. Cruz - Alum Rock Branch Library, by 8:00 pm on Wednesday July 15th.
All participants will receive a printed copy of their photo, which will be displayed for the exhibit on July 22nd. The winner will be recognized at the exhibit and receive a framed copy of their photo, as well as a gift card to a local store.

Snow Day with the Children's Discovery Museum
Have a snow day in your library and study science at the same time! Using instant snow, students will experiment with the properties of a polymer, compare real snow to instant snow, and discover how the elements (water, salt) affect instant snow. Children use microscopes to make their discoveries.

Make Your Own Vacation Scrapbook
Celebrate Adult Summer Reading and "Master the Art of Reading" by commemorating your vacation travels and photos in a book that you create! We'll use Esther Smith's "How to Make Books" to create unique personalized books. One lucky winner gets a free copy of Smith's book! Please bring a few personal photographs or photocopies of photographs with you to feature on your pages.

teensReach meeting
teensReach is the youth council for the San Jose Public Library. It provides a key way for young adults to build their leadership skills by developing and participating in library activities, as well as becoming library advisors and advocates. Some of the activities teensReach members have been involved in include: children's craft programs, creating new programs for teens and children, and representing San Jose Public Library at community events.

Deeper into Meditation
A Board certified psychiatrist and long-time meditator, Dr. Zaslove leads this helpful and stimulating workshop for old and new meditators, demonstrating the most natural and effective techniques of meditation, and giving many useful directions for deepening and stabilizing our meditation practices to gain more inner bliss and peace. Based on Inner and Outer Peace Through Meditation by Rajinder Singh.
